Housebuilder Taylor Wimpey was one of the few gainers in a sea of red.

Aerospace manufacturer Melrose Industries was the worst performer on the index, closely followed by private equity investment firm Intermediate Capital.

Dan Coatsworth, investment analyst at AJ Bell, pointed out in a note on Friday that Melrose has a significant sales presence across the pond, with almost two-thirds (64%) of its sales in the US. In addition, Melrose has just opened a multi-million dollar factory in San Diego meaning it now has 29% of facilities housed there, he said.

Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust - which is heavily- exposed to the US tech sector - was the fourth worst performer on the index.
